Stevenson Wilderness Expo in the Ventana

Robert Louis Stevenson School of Pebble Beach will once again embark on their annual Sophomore Wilderness Expedition, and for the first year in many, it will take place in the Ventana Wilderness.

Recently the course instructors and co-leaders did a training hike along the Pine Ridge trail from China Camp down to the Big Sur River drainage and out to Big Sur Station.  Invited to join the team as an instructor, I was pleased to be with a seasoned group of young backpackers ready to put in some hard miles. (The co-leaders are juniors and seniors at Stevenson who did the 11 day Wilderness Expedition when they were sophomores and have now come back to serve as mentors to the younger students.  The instructors are made up of Stevenson faculty and young outdoor professionals-- some of whom graduated from Stevenson).

Arriving at a very dry Pine Valley

Splitting into 3 separate hiking groups, we made our way to Pine Valley and reconvened with an evening circle, dinner and music sharing, with the whole valley to ourselves. Saturday we continued along the Pine Ridge trail and on down toward Barlow Flat camp along the Big Sur Wild and Scenic River.  A mighty day of hiking, approximately 12 miles, was handled well by the young nature enthusiasts.

New signage at the junction was erected by a UCSC-Youth in Wilderness outing last spring, and made by students in the North Salinas High School wood shop class.

A great weekend backpacking trip in the Ventana left everyone hungry for more!  Thanks to Stevenson for having me along.  The full 11 day course takes place February 21st to March 4th.

"The Sophomore Wilderness Expedition introduces students to an exciting and rugged wilderness environment through outdoor activities while emphasizing the development of a positive attitude toward challenging situations. This is accomplished while simultaneously teaching specific outdoor skills to meet the physical demands made by the environment."
