Rainy Weekend with Stevenson

After the storm

After the storm

Last weekend I once again joined the Stevenson School, this time for their last staff training before the longer 11 day Expo that departs at the end of this month.  We were treated to a glorious rain storm that tested the group's ability, morale and rain gear.  I'm pleased to report this hearty group made the best of a wet weekend, hiking the 7 miles to Pat Springs in the rain Saturday- - sometimes coming sideways- - and setting up their "ridge-line" tarp system at base camp with expertise.

On Sunday the wet conditions continued, but nevertheless a contingent of coleaders (Stevenson high school juniors and seniors that shined as sophomores on the Expo) and instructors formed to hike the Ventana Double Cone trail to Puerto Suello, investigating a possible route for the longer expedition and enjoying a day-hike in the rain, engulfed in swirling clouds and mist.  With loppers and hand-saws ready, students helped clear some of the encroaching brush along the VDC and saw some dozen small trees that had fallen across the trail.  At the junction of the VDC and Puerto Suello we cleared back some of the encroaching ceonothus then hiked down to take a look at the spring 1/4 mile down, it was wet but not really flowing.  The exhilaration of being out in the wet conditions and traversing the ridges made for a wonderful day followed by hot drinks, dinner and the warmth of our sleeping bags and shelters.  Unfortunately due to the wet conditions, I have no photos of that day.

Monday morning the clouds and mist began to subside and the sweet golden rains of sun peaked in and out of the lingering moisture, treating us to views of Ventana Double Cone, Pico Blanco and on out to the mighty Pacific.

Thanks Stevenson for another fun weekend, being out in the rain is often more fun that it sounds!  We sure need it.
